The purebred Arabian stallion named Khemosabi is a horse with whose life I was connected.  My parents bred Khemosabi.  Khemosabi's dam, Jurneeka, was the mare whom I showed as a junior rider.  I handled Khemosabi's advertising, in his early career, including writing the cartoon strip entitled:  "THE EXCITING ADVENTURES OF KHEMOSABI, SUPERHORSE OF THE 70'S, WHO WITH RUTH, HIS FAITHFUL REDHAIRED COMPANION, FIGHTS A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE AND THE ARABIAN WAY".

Khemosabi was a successful showhorse.  He won four national championships in All Arabian competition: U.S. National Champion Halter Stallion, Canadian National Champion Halter Stallion, U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Horse and Canadian National Champion Western Pleasure Horse.  Khemosabi was a successful breeding stallion as well.  He sired 1,300 purebred Arabian offspring, including race-winners on the track, and National Champion showhorses in halter and many divisions in performance, from English Pleasure to Working Western Champions in trail, reining, cutting, and working cowhorse.  I syndicated Khemosabi in 1979, and was a co-owner, and adviser to "Ruth, the Faithful Redhaired Companion", my mother, who was Manager of the Khemosabi Syndicate, until Khemosabi died at age 34 in 2001.

This Johnny Johnston photo was taken of Khemo as a young stallion -- I think about 4 years old.  This may have been taken at the Canadian Nationals in 1971 -- where the young Khemosabi was Top Ten Stallion in his first trip to the Canadian Nationals. This  Johnny Johnston photo was taken of Khemo in 1999, at age 32.  This was taken at Khemo's 32nd Birthday Party at Rancho Valle Del Sol, owned by Ron and Lynn Hogan, which was Khemo's last home, where his special friend Laura Cronk took such good care of him.  This Jerry Sparagowski photo shows Khemo in his late teens or early twenties.  I am not sure of the location, although it may have been Nabers-Villasenor Ranch in Valley Center California, where Khemosabi stood at stud, under the direction of Mike Villasenor.  Khemo's "special person" in the "Nabers-Villasenor" years was a lady named Deanne Dent, who regularly rode him, groomed him and took care of him.
This is an airbrushed Johnny Johnston photo, was the unretouched photo shown immediately to the right. This Johnny Johnston photo of Khemosabi was taken in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in October 1973 when the 6 year old Khemo had just been named U.S. National Champion Halter Stallion.  Khemo's coat was always fine and naturally bright.  We groomed him by hand rubbing baby oil into his coat.  There was a company at the show with a new silicone-based grooming product.  They asked us to try it on Khemo, and we did, but Khemo was just as shiny with the hand rubbed baby oil, so we stuck with the baby oil as our chief grooming aid (plus we used to put cornstarch on his white stockings, then brush it out to leave a shimmering white). This Johnny Johnston shot is of a young Khemo -- maybe 3 or 4 years old.  I am not sure where it was taken, but may have been in Washington or Oregon, where Khemo was often shown as a young horse.
This was taken at Lasma West, in Santa Ynez, California, where Khemo stood at stud in the mid-80's.  Khemo was about 14 or 15 years old in this picture.  Doug and Sherrie Garner managed and took special care of Khemo at Lasma West.  At Lasma West, Khemo had a stall at the end of the stallion barn, across the aisle from his friend, and fellow U.S. National Champion Stallion, *El Paso, who was imported from Poland by Occidental Petroleum's Oxy Arabians division, prior to El Paso's syndication.  Khemo was a bit of an escape artist, and at Lasma West, could get out of his stall.  Doug and Sherrie would come into the barn in the morning and find Khemo out, in the aisle, over talking to *El Paso (whose barn name was "Tex").  It was said that Khemo was telling Tex Polish jokes.  The two stallions were friends, no joke. This is another wonderful Johnny Johnston shot of the 32 year old Khemo at his Birthday Party at Rancho Valle Del Sol.  He looked pretty good for a 32 year old horse.  At that age, some people called him the "Dick Clark" of Arabian horses. This is another fine photo by Jerry Sparagowski, taken at Lasma West in Santa Ynez.
This is yours truly, with Khemosabi in 1999, taken near the time of his 32nd birthday, but not the same day.  I was still wearing a mustache.  My parents had Johnny Johnston come out to take some family photos with Khemo, This head shot, judging by the halter used must have been taken at Lasma West, which would make it an early-80's shot. This classic Sparagowski photo of Khemo was taken at Nabers-Villasenor, in about 1986 or 1987, which would make Khemo about 19 or 20 years old in this shot.

This shot was taken at the 1999 family photo session with Johnny Johnston.  Along with Khemo and me are my sons Joseph Husband (at age 11), Daniel Husband (then age 5) and David Husband (then age 3).  I was trying to get Daniel to take the lead,  David had the end of the lead, and Khemo was patiently waiting. I believe that this shot was taken at Pereira Arabians in Santa Ynez, owned by Bill and Susan Pereira in the late 70's.  Khemo stood at Pereira Arabians prior to being syndicated.  While at Pereiras', Khemo became the leading sire in a volume of the Arabian Stud book, and also became the leading living sire of champion Arabian showhorses.
